Read the section below before you order. An owner-builder permit does not by itself oblige you to display the sign a licensed builder must display — but a condition of your consent, or the safety duty on a larger job, may still ask for a board.
Common questions
Do owner builders have to display a sign in NSW?
Not because of the permit itself. The signage rule in the Home Building Regulation applies to licensed contractors doing residential building work, and an owner-builder working under a Fair Trading permit is not covered by it. What does commonly require a board is a condition of your development consent or CDC, and on work costing $250,000 or more the principal contractor’s duty under clause 308 of the WHS Regulation. Read your consent first — it usually spells out what the board must show.
How much does an owner builder sign cost?
Five 600 × 900mm boards are $160 including GST and delivery; eyelets add $2.20 a board. Boards are sold in fives — a single board cost nearly as much again to courier as to print — so the spares cover a second street frontage, the site office and a replacement when one walks.
What goes on it?
Your name as it appears on the permit, the permit number, and the number that answers for the site. The site address is optional and is set small at the foot. If your consent condition names something else that must appear — permitted work hours are a common one — put it in the site address field or ask us to quote it and we will set the board to the condition.
Is this the same as a principal contractor sign?
No. The principal contractor sign carries the name, phone, after-hours number and site office location that clause 308 asks for on work of $250,000 or more. This board is the simpler owner-builder version: name, permit number, phone. If your job is over the threshold and you are running it yourself, order that one.
Do I need to upload artwork?
No. Type the three details and we set the board. There is no file to supply and no designer to brief — the preview on this page is the layout you are buying.
Can I put my logo on it?
Yes, at no extra cost. Choose the file below the details and we keep a clear strip at the foot of the sign for it; you see the space reserved in the preview and the logo itself on the proof at print size.
How long does it take?
2-4 working days from payment, delivered. Need it sooner? Ask — a tighter date is quoted per job — talk to us or put the date on the order request. Because the artwork is set from what you type there is no file to check first, so the proof usually goes out the same business day the order lands.

Whether you actually need one
Reviewed September 2026
The honest answer is: often not, and we would rather say so than sell you a board you do not need. The site signage rule most people have in mind is the one in the NSW Home Building Regulation, and it applies to a licensed contractor doing residential building work — it is the rule that puts a licence number and the words “licensed contractor” on a sign. An owner-builder working under a permit from NSW Fair Trading is not a licensed contractor doing that work, and that particular obligation is not yours.
Three things can still put a board at your front fence.
A condition of your consent. Councils frequently attach a site-identification condition to a development consent or CDC — a board showing who is building, a contact number for complaints, and permitted work hours. That condition is the most common reason an owner-builder orders this sign, and it is worth reading your consent before you order, because the condition usually says exactly what has to be on the board.
The safety duty on a larger job. If the construction work costs $250,000 or more and you have not engaged someone else as principal contractor, then under clause 308 of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017 — section 308 of the Queensland regulation, which is the same clause — the principal contractor must display name and contact numbers including an after-hours number, visible from outside the site. On a job that size, the principal contractor sign is the board you want, not this one, because it carries the after-hours number that clause asks for.
Because it is useful. A board with a name and a number on it answers the neighbour, the delivery driver and the inspector without anyone having to knock, which on a site with no site office is worth the fifty dollars on its own.
This page is general orientation, not advice. Read your own consent conditions, and confirm your position with NSW Fair Trading or the QBCC before relying on anything here.
You will see a proof before it prints
No login required
The preview on this page shows the words at the sign’s proportions. Once the order is in, we set the print file from what you typed and send a proof link that opens on your phone. Check every digit of the permit number, and send it back if anything is wrong. Nothing goes to press until you approve it.
If it comes back wrong against an approved proof, that is on us. If it matches the proof you approved, it is not — which is why the proof is worth two minutes of your time.
