Which sign, which colour

What each colour means

Danger: a red oval on a black header, for a hazard that can kill or seriously injure. Warning and caution: a yellow header or triangle, for a hazard to watch for. Mandatory: a blue disc, for something everyone must do, such as wearing a helmet. Prohibition: a red ring and slash, for something nobody may do. Emergency information: white on green, for first aid, exits and assembly points. Fire equipment: white on red. Notice: a blue header, for general information.

600 × 450 or 900 × 600?

600 × 450mm is the usual size for a door, a wall or a fence panel, read from a few metres away. 900 × 600mm is for a site entry, a car park or anywhere the sign is read from further back. A rough rule is 10mm of letter height for every 3 metres of viewing distance; the viewing-distance guide has the table.
